Vintage Mens Watch – Rytime Military Style AS 1287 Swiss Watch – WWII Era “Service Watch” – Chrome Steel Case
This is a great survivor from the WWII era. We are not sure if it saw combat but we know from the designation on the back that it was intended to be a “Service Watch”. This Rytime by Fairfax Watch was imported to the USA from Switzerland. It has a steel case, a mellow yellow dial, skeleton hour and minute hands, a red sweep second hand and a full chapter ring. The illuminated style numerals do not glow now, but they once did. The dial is signed RYTIME / WATERDUST PROTECTED INCABLOC / 17 JEWEL / SWISS. The dial has patina and the case shows wear as you might anticipate in a 1940s era watch.
The movement that powers this watch is a very good Swiss made movement. The movement was used all throughout the 1940s, so it is not a surprise that it is in a military style watch that is signed “Service Watch” on the back of the case.
Various examples of other well known Swiss brands have used this AS 1287 movement including 1940s Olma Watches and Musette Watches
The AS 1287 was made with 15 and with 17 jewels; this is 17. It has a 40 hour power reserve 40, meaning that when new a full wind would have kept the watch runing for 40 hours if you forgot to wind it. The AS 1287 movement is signed Fairfax Watch Co 17 Jewels.
The case back is signed: SERVICE WATCH / CHROME PLATED BASE METAL / STEEL BACK / INCABLOC / WATERPROTECTED ANTIMAGNETIC / 23087 / 10 (IN A CIRCLE)
32 mm in diameter not counting the winding crown
40 mm lug to lug
The watch is furnished with a new brown alligator pattern genuine leather band and staihless steel buckle.
RYTIME was a contraction of the words “Right Time” (say the two words fast and you will get it, as in “Do you have the rytime?”). Clever! Rytime was part of the Fairfax Watch Company. The Fairfax name was a trademark of the E. M. Rosenthal Jewelry Co., a Washington DC based jewelry and watch importer and wholesaler; among their other brands were Ellicott Watches.
